To get an overview of the product, you should start by:
- Studying the package
- Completing the Getting Started Tutorial
- Reviewing the MyLabelDesigner Manual and Addendum
- Reading the following "last minute" notes
These "last minute" notes include feature additions and changes which are not mentioned in the Getting Starting Tutorial or the Manual. You may want to review the Manual for more information on some of the features which were changed. So let's begin . . .
1. Balloon Help
For those people who have System 7 installed on their Macintosh, Balloon Help is available on the MyLabelDesigner screen. To use this feature, go up to the Help (?) Menu in the upper right corner and select Show Balloons. Then point with the mouse at the buttons or tools you wish help with and a balloon with instructions will appear. For further instructions, consult the MyLabelDesigner manual for that feature. To turn Balloon Help off, simply select Hide Balloons from the Help (?) Menu.
2. Next in List/Print List
To ease the printing of small groups of labels, Next in List and Print List as stated in the Manual were abandoned. Instead, New with Current Design, Previous/Next Label and Print Several Labels were adopted.
3. New with Current Design
New with Current Design allows you to create a set of labels with similar design. New with Current Design will create a new, untitled file with the same design as the file currently open. To effectively use this feature, open a file which has a design similar to the label you want. Select New with Current Design, make the desired changes in the label and save the file with a new name. This eases the creation of a group of files with similar designs (e.g mailing labels).
4. Previous/Next Label
To help you move through your files, we have added the Previous and Next Label buttons. These buttons allow you to view all MyLabelDesigner files in the current folder one at a time. They are only active if you have two or more MyLabelDesigner files in the same folder and one of those files is open in MyLabelDesigner. Clicking on Next Label will open the next MyLabelDesigner file alphabetically in the current folder. Previous will open the previous MyLabelDesigner file in the folder alphabetically. To change the current folder, open a MyLabelDesigner file from the desired folder.
5. Print Several Labels
Many times you may want to print a small list or group of labels at the same time. For instance, when you want to use an entire sheet of laser labels rather than wasting or skipping labels. Print Several Labels allows you to do this. Print Several Labels will print two or more labels that are in the current folder. To use this feature, create two or more labels in a folder. Choose Print Several Labels... from the File Menu. A dialog will appear which allows you to choose from the label files in the current folder.
Select the labels you wish to print by clicking on their file names. Click on Select All to select all of the labels listed. Click on Clear to clear all selections. To de-select a label, simply click on it again so that it is no longer selected. Use the scroll bar to scroll through the labels in the current folder if necessary. To change the current folder, open a file from the desired folder and then select Print Several Labels.
Once you have finished making your selections, click on the Print button. A dialog will appear allowing you to choose the number of copies of each label desired. Click OK in this dialog and in the Print Dialog. Each selected label (that is the same label size as the first label alphabetically) will be printed as many times as specified.
6. x/y Coordinates
When you move an object(s) within a label, the x/y Coordinates of the object(s) are displayed in the Statistics Box. The x/y Coordinates will indicate the position of the upper, left corner of the object selected. If more than one object is selected, the x/y Coordinates are those of the object which you click on to move the group of objects. The x/y Coordinates can be switched from inches to centimeters by selecting Metric from the Display Menu.
7. Save As..., New with Current Design & Custom Label Sizes
If you have created Custom Label sizes in one file and wish to create a new file which has the same custom label sizes in the Labels Menu, you must open that file in MyLabelDesigner. You can then either select Save As... or New with Current Design. Save As... will bring up a dialog asking for a new name for the file. Enter a new name and click OK. New with Current Design will load up an untitled file. Both operations maintain the same label design as the previous file as well as the Custom Label specifications in the Label Menu.
8. Text Fields
To exit a text field without using a mouse, hold down the Shift key while you press the Return key or simply press the Enter key on your numeric key pad. Pressing Return twice now inserts a blank line into a text field.
9. Zoom
When you zoom in or out on a label, keep in mind that text will not always be in "What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG)" format. There may be some discrepancies between what you see on the screen and what you get when you print your label. This happens when the zoom factor displays text on screen in a font size which is not an integer (e.g. 9 point, 10 point, 12 point, etc.). To display correctly on screen, MyLabelDesigner will round the the text size up or down to the closest integer font size.
10. Objects overlapping the Tools Bar
When an object is larger than the label and overlaps the Tools Bar, the object may override the tool buttons. This is so you can click on the object and move it back onto the label. Once you do this, the tool buttons will be reactivated.
11. EPS, PICT, and PICT2 Files
You can only have one EPS, PICT or PICT2 file in a label.
12. System 7
Due to some memory problems, Aliases in the Apple Menu may not load up if selected in MyLabelDesigner. This will depend on what type of Macintosh you own and how much RAM you have. To run Aliases, just switch to Finder before selecting them. System 7.0.1 seems to help with some Aliases!
